Wampus Cats open home slate this weekend

The Uwharrie Wampus Cats will be looking for a strong start to their second season and first in the Southern Collegiate Baseball League this weekend when they play a pair of home games at Don Montgomery Park.

The Wampus Cats' home opener is this Saturday night when they host their rival, the Carolina Disco Turkeys, at 7 p.m. Tickets are $7 in advance and $8 at the gate. 

The two teams will meet again in a Memorial Day match-up on Monday at 6 p.m.

"We're expecting an electric atmosphere, just like our home opener last summer," said team president and co-owner Greg Sullivan. "I know the team team and coaches are excited to see this year's team and the fans I've talked to are excited too."

The Wampus Cats were supposed to begin their season with an away game at the Boone Bigfoots, but that game on Thursday was rained out. The Cats face the Disco Turkeys in the Turkeys' home opener on Friday night at Wake Forest University's stadium in Winston-Salem. 

Aside from the Disco Turkeys, other SCBL teams the Wampus Cats will host this year include the Mooresville Spinners, Statesville Owls, Concord Athletics and others.
